This work looks simply like a device to draw circles, but what’s noticeable is that meanings of the original and its copy are represented by the moving equipment and its function. This work is composed of two turntables and a handle in the center. If turning the handle, the turntables rotate and draw circles at the same speed on the white paper laid on a turntable. The circles are described at regular intervals of 1 mm by a fine pen operated by the gear. The circles look like the record tracks as the frequency of drawing increases. Although the turntables revolve, no sound arises. That is why this work is intended to make the viewer associate the sound while seeing the rotating turntables, not to bring about any sound.
In this work featuring the dynamics of two individuals, viewers, by turning its handle, may hear the sound of a revolving record through their eyes, not their ears. That is because they directly witness the process of forming the tracks and have a first-hand experience of turning the handle by using part of their bodies. This work can be referred to as the “work of drawing the sound” in that it makes use of the non-musical elements such as the color of a disk, its movement, and a din of the gear
이 작품은 단순히 원을 그리는 기계같이 보이지만 주목할 점은 그 원을 그리는 원본대상이 구체적인 목적을 지닌 오브제인 레코드 판이라는 것으로 원본과 복제본의 상대적 의미를 움직이는 장치와 기능을 빌어 표현하는 작업이다. 회전하는 실제 레코드판과 동일하게 만들어진 하얀색 종이는 가운데 설치된 손잡이를 돌리면 동일한 회전수를 가지면서 동일한 속도로 회전 하게 되고 회전하는 레코드 판과 동일한 속도로 원이 그려지게 된다. 종이 위에 원을 그리는 얇은 펜은 1mm 간격으로 홈이 난 기어의 움직임에 의해 일정한 간격으로 그려진다. 그려진 선은 점점 그 회수가 증가할 수록 마치 레코드 판의 트랙을 닮게 된다. 관객은 계속 손잡이를 돌리면서 레코드 판과 그림을 그리는 판을 동일하게 회전시킴으로 전기를 켠 턴테이블과 그것을 모방하고 있는 오브제를 보게 된다. 턴테이블은 회전하지만 트랙에 녹음된 레코드 판은 소리가 나지 않는다. 왜냐하면 이 작품은 소리를 내는 것이 목적이 아니라 눈으로 돌아가는 레코드 판을 보고 소리를 연상하는 것이 작품의 의도이기 때문이다. 서로 다른 개체 사이에 존재하는 역학 관계를 회전이라는 기능을 갖춘 장치로 표현한 이 작업은 관객이 직접 핸들을 잡고 손으로 돌리게 함으로써 회전하는 레코드판의 소리를 귀로 듣는 것이 아니라 바로 ‘눈으로 듣는다’라고 표현 할 수 있다. 그것은 손잡이를 돌리는 회전운동과 선이 겹쳐져 트랙을 만들어 가는 그림을 관객이 직접 눈으로 보고 신체의 일부를 사용하여 경험하기 때문이다. 이 작품은 턴테이블을 회전시켜 추출할 수 있는 레코드 판의 직접적인 소리를 레코드 판의 색깔, 움직임, 기어가 맛물리는 소음 같은 음악이 아닌 다른 요소들을 이용한다는 의미에서 이른 바 ‘소리를 그리는 작업’이라 할 수 있다.
